Prophicies or Factions: Which to buy First?
I have a friend whos intrested in getting into Guild Wars but can only afford to buy one game at the moment... He asked what chapter to get first and i told him Prophicies would be his best bet... As it has a more indepth storymode and will give him longer to learn about the game, but in reality it doesn't really matter all that much. He asked someone else he knows and they've told him he should get Factions, simply because they reckon it's better than Prophicies as it as ''more things todo''.
I still stand by that Prophicies is the best option to go for, and my friend would like your opinions on the matter to help him deciede. |

Chapter 1 by far for a new person...Think of Factions as a glorified Expansion. Chapter 1 is much friendlier to the new player.

I second the Prophecies suggestion. Start there and move to Factions if desired.

Factions doesn't help a new player when it comes to teaching them the basics too well :/
Sure, there's that opening mission which gives you tons of information, but after the first two missions, good luck figuring out aggro properly. Monsters galore. Gogo Prophecies! |

As with any game, its hard to jump into the middle of it and be expected to know exactically what to do. when at all possible it is always best to start at the beginning and learn the game from the start before heading into any expansions. so i would suggest starting in Guild Wars: Prophecies.

Forget Prophecies. It seems that it is "it's in the past" for ANet. You won't get new updates for it - just check this week update and see for yourself.

I would buy Prophecies. It was a better game in my opinion, and all the skill updates etc still effect characters there.

In response to the thread, I'd go for Prophecies. You level up waaaaaaaaay too fast in Factions and there is far less time to develop skill. Also, if Factions gave out more skills than just having to buy them player skill would develop even more. Prophecies introduces main characters, such as the monk dude(cant spell his name), Devona, Cynn, and all the other dudes. Chaper 1 before Chaper 2 dude. |

Check to see if any place is doing a special deal for both prophecies and factions. If not then defenatly get Prophecies

Prophecies is much better for new players than factions, just because it takes longer to level up so new players have more time to try out different builds and learn the basics before they get to more advanced missions. Prophecies just seems a lot more new user friendly.
And no, prophecies WILL get more updates. Arena Net didn't just completely forget prophecies. Prophecies has been out for about a year now, so many of it's bugs and such are fixed, but factions hasn't even been out half a year, and there are still bugs that need to be fixed. Therefore you would expect more updates for factions than prophecies. |

well, though chapter one was generally better for new players, putting the scammers in post ascalon into the mix, I would say factions, since you get all the professions and a good boost on new character development
I'm serious about post ascalon, that place is filled with so much BS from people, I have yet to see any of that in the monastery Last edited by Plushie Penguin; Jul 15, 2006 at 05:22 AM // 05:22.. |

Buy factions because you get everything, prophecies is better, but you get everything in factions. Factions is hard for new players, because 5% of area is for new players, which isnt enough room to adept. I think factions was a cheap expansion which offered 1 good thing Alliance Battle, it should be $39.99, but GW Staff like money, as we do too, and makes it $49.99.

Prophecies. It's much better for newbies, and also better than Factions in general.
